Lotto Block October 21, 2021
Read all directions before beginning.
Block designed by Cheryl Brickey.
You are given: a 2 ¾” x 42” strip of white fabric.
You will need: (4) 5” charm squares – 2 different reds and 2 different greens; (8) solid black 2 ¾” squares.
From the long white strip, cut (8) 2 ¾” squares, (1) 5” strip and (1) 10 ½” strip.
Set aside the white squares. Carefully cut both the 5” strip and the 10 ½” strip in half lengthwise, making 1-3/8” strips.
Gather your charm squares and the white and black 2 ¾” squares. Draw a line from corner to corner on the back side of all (8) white squares. Place (2) white squares (RST) on opposite corners of a 5” square. Sew on the line of both squares, then cut ¼” on the outside of the line and press the seam however you’d like. Do the same for the other 3 charm squares.
Now draw a line from corner to corner on the back side of all (8) black squares. Place (2) black squares (RST) on opposite corners of your charm square. Again, sew on the line of both squares, cut ¼” outside the line and press the seam. Do the same for the other charms.
Place the charms in a 4-patch, making sure that a white corner is pointing to the middle of the bigger square. Place a 5” x 1-3/8” strip between the two left-side patches and another between the right-side patches. Sew the two strips to their top patches (RST) (good ¼” seam please). Press. Turn the two bottom patches up onto the small strips and sew together (RST). Press. You now should have 2 left side charms connected by a thin strip and 2 right side charms connected by a thin strip.
Place the 10 ½” strip down the middle of the two sections (it will be 1/8” too long) and sew it to each section. Press. Trim off any extra at the bottom. Your finished block should look like the example shown on the extra page.
